Summer can be a difficult season for cats because they cannot regulate their corporal temperature as efficiently as we can. As a caring pet owner (or a pamperer from our conciergerie network), it is essential to take actions in order to make your fur friends to stay cool and comfortable during hot days. Our behavioral team at Tout Pour Le Toutou gives you some tips to help your chat to get refreshed during summer.
-
Fresh water available for your cat
Make sure to provide fresh water to your cat all the time. You can add some ice cubes into their bowl to assure that the water will stay fresh for a longer period of time and you can also put more water bowls in different places at your house. Why not invest in a water fountain? In fact, having water in movement encourages cats to stay hydrated!
-
Create a cool place indoor
Create a cool space inside your house where your cat can go and rest during the hottest hours. Close the curtains and shutters to make the space cool and shady, and you can also use a fan to make the air circulate. You just need to be sure that the fan is not going directly to your cat. Another option is using the cool mat or a humid towel placed on the floor or on a piece of furniture can also be appreciated by some cats.
-
Brush your cat
Brushing your cat in order to eliminate the dead fur once having a thick coat can contribute to heat retention. This will also help prevent knots from forming, which is also a reason for your cat to be uncomfortable during hot days.
-
Refreshing toys
Offer refreshing toys to your cat so they have get fun with them while being refreshed. You can freeze the toys in a wet fabric or water balls so that they become icy toys for your cat. Offer him a bowl with floating toys that they can grab.
-
Avoid walking and les sollicitations during warmer hours
If you are used to going for a walk with your cat, avoid doing it during the hottest hours of the day. Prefer to walk with them early in the morning or late in the afternoon where the temperature is lower. The same advice goes to playing with your cat: choose to play early in the morning or at the end of the day.
By following these simple tips you can help your cat to stay fresh during hot days this summer. If your cat shows excessive panting, lethargy or pale gums, don't hesitate to take them to your vet.
